Dog owners are requested to keep their dogs under control in accordance with the Dog Act 1976. Owners are required to have their property fenced in a manner capable of confining their dog. Wandering dogs are a nuisance and a danger to the community. Substantial fines are applicable for breaches of the Dog Act. The Act does allow for on the spot destruction of dogs in certain circumstances.

The State Government's Dog Amendment Act 1996 provide Local Governments with new powers to act against irresponsible owners and dangerous dogs. All maximum penalties have been substantially increased. If you are unsure of your responsibilities as a dog owner contact the Shire Ranger Joe Collins.
