The proposed Wagin Pump Track received a significant show of community support at Tuesday's Ordinary Council Meeting, with more than 50 residents of all ages attending to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the project.
The project has been led by the Wagin Action Group, a dedicated group of local volunteers who contributed funding alongside the Shire to develop a concept design late last year by leading designer Common Ground.
The Shire of Wagin is now preparing an application to the Commonwealth Government's Growing Regions Program Round 3 in an effort to secure funding for the project.
A pump track is a purpose-built riding circuit that allows riders to generate momentum through body movement rather than pedalling. Suitable for bicycles, scooters, skateboards and similar wheeled activities, pump tracks provide an inclusive recreational facility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
The proposed facility is valued at approximately $400,000 and would represent a major investment in community recreation infrastructure. The Shire is seeking financial assistance through the Growing Regions Program to help deliver the project, alongside a contribution from the Shire and significant in-kind support from volunteers, including members of the Wagin Action Group.
Deputy Shire President Cr Bryan Kilpatrick said the strong attendance at the Council meeting reflected the level of community support behind the proposal.
"It was fantastic to see more than 50 residents attend the Council meeting to show their support for the pump track proposal. The turnout demonstrates there is genuine community demand for this project and a shared desire to see it become a reality."
"Council supports the proposal and recognises the benefits it could deliver for local families, young people and visitors. However, a project of this scale requires financial assistance from other levels of government if it is to proceed."
"The Commonwealth Growing Regions Program is expected to be highly competitive, and demonstrating strong community backing will be critical to securing funding for Wagin. Every letter of support helps strengthen our application."
Cr Kilpatrick encouraged residents, businesses and community organisations to build on the momentum generated at the meeting by actively supporting the grant application.
"We encourage residents, businesses and community groups to put their support in writing and to contact our Federal Member for O'Connor, Rick Wilson MP, and our State Member for Roe, Peter Rundle MLA, to demonstrate the importance of this project to the Wagin community and the wider region."
Community members wishing to support the proposal are encouraged to provide a letter of support to the Shire and to advocate for the project with State and Commonwealth representatives.
With funding expected to be highly competitive, demonstrating broad community support will be a critical factor in the Shire's efforts to secure external investment and deliver this exciting community project.
